New York Mayor takes Aim at Twilo |
 |
Twilo and the Roxy have been attacked by New York Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington, for their policy of hiring private ambulances to cater for clubbers needing hospital treatment. “People are overdosing and the fact they put an ambulance outside a nightclub should be enough to establish that nightclub should be closed,” Washington told the New York Times this week. The story emerged after officials from Greenwich Village’s St Vincent’s Hospital notified local authorities, who then began investigating whether clubs were actively trying to bypass the police. Mayor Washington told the Times that the very presence of the ambulances provided ‘further proof that the clubs should be shut down.”
Both the Roxy and Twilo defended themselves robustly, with the Roxy’s general manager Jason McCarthy singling out GHB as a key factor in the issue. “"Several clubs in the neighbourhood have had people die in them because of GHB. And when people go down, 911 is useless.” Twilo, which has been under threat of closure since 1998, also disputed the Mayor’s conclusions.
"We are blamed for everything and we are never given the benefit of the doubt," said Peter R. Sullivan, Twilo’s lawyer. "The reason we are still open is because we have been able to prove to the courts that we are the safest club in New York."
In an ominous echo of the circumstances that preceded the indictment of the New Orleans 3, Twilo’s lawyer added that they’d long sought to collaborate more closely with New York authorities. “We have been asking the city for two years to work with us to make sure there are no illegal drug transactions in the club and they have refused,” Mr Sullivan said. “So we have had to create a state-of-the-art medical system of our own."

The “New Orleans 3” are the trio of American club promoters facing 20 years to life in jail if convicted under ‘crack-house laws’ which authorities are trying to pin on people connected with dance events. Scratch djs speak out on a recent Heineken add spoofing the creation of the scratch and call for a boycott |
 |
Perhaps you saw the Heineken commercial, during the Grammy's, featuring a DJ rockin' the party, back in the early 80's. He accidentally spills his beer on the turntables and when he attempts to wipe it off he "invents" the scratch. The year shown on the screen is 1982...
Many of Hip Hop's legendary DJs have expressed their outrage but the most insulted of all is the actual creator of the scratch, GrandWizzard Theodore. In the Summer of 1975, at the age of 13, Theodore created the technique that would eventually become one of the signature sounds of Hip Hop music today. Turntablists like Kuttin Kandi, Bobbitto, Mix Master Ice, and Qbert have all expressed their dissappointment in the misportrayal of turntablism by Heineken. If you would like to express your concerns Heineken USA can be reached at:914-681-4100 or e-mail at info@heinekenusa.com or info@heineken.com
Digitalscratch.com feels the ad is clearly misleading and it is unfortunate that Heineken has not responded to the turntablist community's concerns. Some sort of a retraction and apology is immediatley in order. Though the commercial was intended as a humorous spoof, there is no excuse for not including the correct year (1975) and in the very least crediting Grand Wizard Theodore by putting his name on the screen during the commercial. Until Heineken remedies the situation digitalscratch.com will fully support the boycott. |

Finally, online music licensing will be available by years end!!!!! |
 |
| Up until the major record companies have done everything they could to slow down and discourage the trading of music digitally over the internet. But technology and progress refused to bend to the record labels will. So in a complete 360 degree turnaround, three of the five major labels have joined up to embrace file sharing technolgy by creating an online music licensing service called music net. Musicnet will actually work with services like Napster to provide on demand legal music downloads and is expected to be up and running by years end.click here |

First copy protected CD to hit stores in May |
 |
| The record labels are looking to take control in the music copying battle by copy protecting their CDs. Copy protection would prevent users from digitally ripping CD tracks to MP3 files or computer based wave files. Leading the technological way for the record companies is Charlie Pride? Yup the old country guy, he will be the first artist to release a copy protected CD. I bet that the CD will sell very well. Since every computer hacker in the world will probably purchase it so they can find ways to defeat the record companies' new holy grail. This is clearly just another move in a chess game, the decoding for DVD copy protection was recently cracked. It is only a question of how many days it will take to do the same with CD copy protection.click here for release info |

Bootleggers Beware, RIAA cracks down |
 |
The U.S. Secret Service, assisted by the Recording Industry Association of America's (RIAA) New York Anti-Piracy Unit, executed two search and seizure warrants in Queens and Manhattan on March 8th. The busts resulted in the break up of a massive counterfeit music operation where approximately 20,000 recorded CD-Rs and 1,200 masters were seized from both the Queens and Manhattan locations. Equipment seized from the Queens location included 102 eight-speed CD-R burners, nine computer monitors, four computers, three thermal imprinters, two paper-cutting machines, two laptops, two industrial color copiers, and two industrial shrink-wrap machines. The music seized included recordings by such popular artists as Jay-Z, Tito Puente, Julio Iglesias, Santana, Jennifer Lopez, and the Beatles.
Frank Creighton, Senior Vice President of the RIAA Anti-Piracy Unit, stated, "On behalf of our member companies and the artists they represent, I'd like to thank the U.S. Secret Service for the tremendous efforts they put forth to address this highly egregious operation. A seizure of this magnitude could not have been achieved without their timely and professional investigation and dedication of precious resources. For that, we are extremely grateful."
This illegal operation had the potential to produce almost three million illicit CD-Rs a year. The estimated yearly loss of revenue to the recording industry due to this operation would have been in excess of $ 47 million. Charges are currently pending against the two individuals involved in the operation. The RIAA is a trade association whose members create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 90% of all legitimate sound recordings produced and sold in the United States. The Anti-Piracy division of the RIAA investigates the illegal production and distribution of sound recordings that cost the music industry hundreds of millions of dollars a year domestically.

Is Netmix.com finished?? |
 |
Fans of Netmix.com were sorley disappointed when pointing their browsers to the site. The reason? They were greeted by a short letter stating "Due to circumstances beyond our control, the netmix.com website will be down until further notice." The letter further goes on to apologize for any inconvenience and thanks all of the site's vendors and DJs for their loyalty. It then leaves contact information for the Netmix priciples, Tony Zeoli, Jon Spooner and Lewis Canfield. No further explaination or details were listed. We have attempted to contact them for a more detailed explaination but have recieved no response as of yet. What's next??? We will keep you posted.
Over the last seven years Netmix.com had distinguished its self as the premier online DJ music and culture site. We at digitalscratch.com are saddened and disappointed by its' demise and hope that it is only a temporary situation.

DJ Gerald 'World Wide' Webb rocks Jillians, San Francisco at the Sony Metreon |
 |
The scene: a packed friday night at Jillians in the Sony Metreon, San Francisco. Residents Scott Kalanikai and DJ Orbie with help from DJ Times columnist and popular local DJ Chris Dejesus worked the crowd to a nice sizzle. Gerald, making his second appearance at Jillians, took over the decks at midnight. His checked luggage was delayed by the airline, including his music, so he scoured Chris, Scott and Orbie's cases for tracks to play. He started things out with a tight old school hip-hop set, turning up the heat on the already sizzling crowd. By the time he brought things up to date, it was clear the crowd was entering a frenzy. Then, Gerald brought Chris and Scott back into the mix and the three traded mixes back to back to back to end the night. At times during Scott and Chris's mixes, Gerald added effects and loops, stoking not only the crowd but Chris and Scott as well. The crowd loved it and many of the sweak soaked club goers stopped by the booth to pay their homage.
When asked about Gerald's set Chris Dejesus commented "Everytime I see him spin, it's like a lesson, I just watch in amazement. He has a creativity and technical mastery of the decks that is hard to describe. You just have to see him play to believe and understand it". |
