  The Fix (album) - Scarface
Ex-Geto Boy Scarface returns with The Fix, his first new album since 2000's Last of a Dying Breed -- and the erstwhile president of Def Jam South still has plenty to say.
But the responsibilities of being a major figure on the business side of the game haven't dulled 'Face's street sensibilities. He's still as raw and blunt as he ever was -- and that's a good thing. Never a powerhouse rhymer or lyricist, 'Face built his rep by just speaking plainly on the mic, turning what he saw on the block everyday into hyperviolent tales for mass consumption. That same strategy still works for him on The Fix, most notably on the unapologetic "On My Block" and "Keep Me Down." On these tracks 'Face pulls no punches as he breaks down the game the way it's played today.

'Face also gets a whole mess of high profile guests on board to pay their respects. Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel spit a few bars on "Guess Who's Back," Nas pops up on "In Between Us" (that's right -- Nas and Jay on the same record, if not the same track; let the haters suck on that), and W.C. does his thing on "I Ain't the One." Meanwhile, Kelly Price graces "What Can I Do" and "Heaven" while Faith Evans blesses "Someday" with a sweet R&B hook. But for all the star power, The Fix is still 'Face's record and man they call "The Godfather of the Dirty South" proves he can still carry the weight all by himself.

  Slam Harder (Album) - Onyx
Onyx's 1993 debut Bacdafucup marked the mid-'90s paradigm-shift from the conscious, uplifting rhymes of rap's golden era to the grimier, street level rhymes of the "reality" age. But while timing alone made that album a classic, the same hyper-aggressive, slam-dancing approach doesn't really pack the same punch anymore, making the group's latest venture Bacdafucup: Part II sound played.
It's not that the slimmed down trio of Sticky Fingaz, Fredro Starr, and DJ Sonsee ( the group lost Big DS awhile back) don't lack skills. Tracks such as "Bang 2 Dis," "Clap and Rob 'Em," and "Wet the Club" all reverberate with the kind of high-octane rage that made previous hits such as "Slam" so much fun. But while Sticky and Fredro were getting their feet wet in Hollywood, the game moved on and tracks such as "Slam Harder," "Onyx Is Back," and "Bring 'Em Out Dead" sound kind of silly when set next to contemporary killers such as M.O.P.

But the most telling track here is the one that kicks off the album, "What's Onyx," where the trio anticipates the question that's sure to be asked by a new generation of hip-hop kids who just won't care.

  Airdrawndagger (album)- Sasha

August 15, 2002

Fresh on the heels of his spectacular grand tour de America with longtime pal John Digweed, our man from North Wales is back in the record bins with his first nonmix album. For his debut disc, Sasha locked himself away with veteran producer Charlie May, who had been instrumental in putting together 1999's Xpander EP. Similarly, the tracks here emphasize the superstar DJ's penchant for subtlety unwinding a track at his leisure. Even standout bits like the closer, "Wavy Gravy," with its highly tweaked and very un-clubby percussion, glide along at an unhurried pace. Other significant moments are "Magnetic North," with its slowly radiating synth textures, the progressive uptempo trance swing of "Fundamental," and the blissfully psychedelic tones of "Requiem."
Also along for the ride here were Sasha's main man Tom Holkenberg (a.k.a. Junkie XL), and one of the busier men on the production scene, James Holden (Anthony Pappa, Dave Seaman). Those who were in attendance for the Sasha & Digweed tour had a chance to preview some of the material here, but the finished product demands more of the sort of focused attention found inside a pair of headphones as opposed to the pop circus atmosphere of the duo's multimedia extravaganza.

Isness (album) - Future Sound of London
No matter how many new electronically driven artists come through, it's always interesting to see what the originators are up to. The Isness is the first album in seven years from the pioneering British duo of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans, a.k.a. Future Sound of London. If the sounds on The Isness are any indication, the time they've spent away from the public's ears has been a life-changing one.
With the pair's Cobain spending a great deal of that time traveling the globe in search of his inner self as well as his physical health, the results turn up on The Isness in a warm and earthy fashion. Not only that, but Future Sound of London have on The Isness -- more than on any of their other works -- managed to organically encapsulate every single one of their varied and disparate influences. These range from indie rock sounds to those ambient in vibe, psychedelic in feel and artsy techno in nature.

Decided Eastern elements are the main common factor here and with Cobain ably singing on the odd tune, there's a whole new dimension uncovered. Additionally the input of seasoned traditional musicians as well as a brass section, a gospel choir and orchestral sounds has its hand in giving The Isness its tangible quality. The Isness may not reach the heights of Future Sound of London's biggest success, the immortal single, "Papua New Guinea," but its simple structures create memorable and identifiable songs.

  Revolverlution (album) - Public Enemy

August 12, 2002

"Sometimes to move forward we must go back" is a maxim fitting for the first new Public Enemy in three years. Rough production, gritty vocals, and driving beats lend the new material a dynamic not seen since 1991's Apocalypse 91 -- The Enemy Strikes Black. Nine new songs, combined with three live cuts ("Fight the Power," "Welcome to the Terrordome," and "Miuzi Weighs a Ton"), four remixes, random skits, and outtakes total 21 tracks of progressive hip-hop vision.
The ever-prolific Chuck D provides his usual conscious lyricism, while Flavor Flav contributes humorous and poignant asides. "Son of a Bush" is a verbal assault on America's "elected leader," and Flav's "Can a Woman Make a Man Lose His Mind" is the most catchy PE cut since "911 Is a Joke." But best of the bunch is the first single, "Gotta Give the Peeps What They Need."

Borrowing from old school design, Chuck used their site, rapstation.com, to upload vocal tracks for fans to remix. The resulting remixes of "By the Time I Get To Arizona," "Shut Em Down," "Public Enemy No. 1," and the aforementioned first single round out Revolverlution. Spending the last decade releasing mediocre discs with great tracks surrounded by filler, Public Enemy returns with an album reminiscent of Fear of a Black Planet. Their hibernation over, the masters have returned.

500 Degreez (album) - Lil Wayne
When it was announced that Juvenile and B.G. would be departing from the Cash Money clique, it was quickly predicted to be a downfall of the dynasty, considering the platinum-plus plateau that the Project English poet maintained. But while the nay sayers await Cash Money's crumble, Lil Wayne emerges with 500 Degreez of fire to prove that the block is still hot.
Regardless of the changes to the roster, Lil Wayne continues to carry out the Cash Money motto of partying, pleasure, and remaining true to the hood. Just when you thought the Dennis Edwards jam, "Don't Look Any Further," couldn't be taken any further than Junior Mafia's "Get Money (Remix)" or Tupac's "Hit Em Up" retaliation towards Bad Boy Records, Lil Wayne turns a Mannie Fresh production into another Hot Boys hit.

While Lil Wayne drops each verse like it's hot, Mannie Fresh's poignant production keeps the album appealing. Mannie's touch on "Gangsta and Pimps" makes you feel like you're actually at Player's Ball hosted by Lil Wheezy and Baby. Even when Petey Pablo pops in to drop some "Gangsta Sh*t" with Lil Wheezy, it's the hyper hip-hop bounce created by Fresh that makes you feel like the North Carolina and New Orleans natives are trapped in a dynamic rap duel.

On another sure-fire hit, "Lovely," Wheezy uses his wobbly wordplay to express what's in his heart: "I love fast cars, I love fast broads, I love fast money, I love Cash Money." But before labeling the 19-year old boy wonder from Magnolia Projects materialistic, he discloses more of his heart in the form a juvenile confession on "Young'n Blues," showing his artistry as an adolescent.

Rounded out by standout rhymes from newcomers Tateeze and Cristale on the paper-chasing punch of "Get That Dough," Cash Money proves that, in the wake of losing their hottest MC, they are "Still Fly."

True Colors (album) - High Contrast
Straight outta Wales comes Link (short for "Lincoln," not a Legend of Zelda reference) Barrett, a wee 22-year-old producer who doesn't eat meat, take drugs, or drink, but who certainly knows how to craft some of the silkiest drum n' bass this side of LTJ Bukem. After dropping a few singles via U.K. imprint Hospital Records, Barrett -- a.k.a. High Contrast -- became one of the most talked about talents in dance music, and at the 2002 Winter Music Conference in Miami, he made his U.S. debut to widespread acclaim at the World of Drum n' Bass event.
True Colours marks the young lad's debut, a stunning and uplifting set of jazzy, delicate, and soulful grooves over two discs, the first containing 10 separate tracks and the second featuring the same 10 tracks (plus two more) mixed continuously. Tracks like "Return of Forever," "Global Love," and "Make It Tonight" come across with stunning clarity, with production cleaner than an operating room. The beats still pump hard enough to get the floor moving, but the sweet, seductive breakdowns and plush adornments set it off from the rest.

In a genre that's often become too gritty for its own good, True Colours is a welcome revelation, for "Music Is Everything," as the title goes on one Latin piano-inflected number, and it's downright beautiful too in the hands of this rising star.

Dance For Me (Remix album) - Mary J. Blige
This, believe it or not, is Mary J. Blige's second remix effort in a mere five-album career: And while 1992's What's the 411: The Remix was quite the trendsetter, Dance for Me comes at the tail-end of 2002's remix trend, which means it's a good thing Blige and the chosen remixers brought their A-game.
There isn't a whiff of hip-hop to be found anywhere here, but Blige will surprise everyone who didn't think she had the vocal cords or delivery to be a club diva; with the likes of Junior Vasquez and the Thunderpuss team (they of Leann Rimes' "Can't Fight the Moonlight") behind her, she leans hard into softies like "Rainy Dayz" and "Your Child," turning them into full-force techno anthems.

But don't try to pin her down just yet: there's surging samba house ("No More Drama), filtered disco ("Family Affair") and nu-skool breaks (title track) treatments; she also proves a natural at disco jams ("Everything," "Let No Man Put Asunder"), just as she does with two-step ("Never Been") and Euro-dance ("Give Me You").

Though a more mix-tape-inspired track ordering would have helped the flow of these songs better, this is the best and most enjoyable remix record of 2002.

Ching Ching- Ms. Jade featuring Nelly Fortado
Alright, this song bumps and has hit written all over it. 'Feel the Girl' was a great introduction to Ms. Jade's lyrical POTency. So as expected she delivers on point vocals again. The catchy what happened to my Ching Ching, Bling bling chorus hooks you the first time and makes you want more. Nelly Fortado joins in on the chorus to add a little more depth and flava. Unfortunatley Ms. Fortado has a whiney solo on the refrain. The good thing is that her nasal intrusion is short and is overshadowed by the songs catchiness and Ms. Jade's sharp toungue.
Timberland ties it all together with another of his ghetto masterpiece beats. The combination of his track and Ms. Jade's vocal will blow up your dance floor.

This is a don't miss, so don't sleep!!!

  Born To Reign (album)
Will Smith has been lapped so many times by better wordsmiths and hipper stars in recent years that he's actually benefited from not keeping up with the Nellys, remaining a sort of nostalgic icon whose simple delivery and chaste lyrics reflect hip-hop's long since lost innocence. And, hey, he's a movie star -- so who cares if he still thinks it's 1988?
The Fresh Prince, though, remains a fascinating niche unto himself, a lone rapper who brags about his lack of profanity, a guy who continues to get older while his audience stays the same age. He's the master, if not the progenitor, of the cheesy, summer-movie accompanying anthem; his albums of the '90s were built beat-by-beat with them and even without them (see "Get Jiggy with It"). No surprise, then, that there's plenty of the same on Born to Reign: "Block Party" updates his classic "Summertime" to a 112-like R&B jam; "Maybe" does the "Thanks for the Memories" bit of "Just the Two of Us"; and Men in Black II's theme song, "Black Suits Comin' (Nod Your Head)," gets two treatments, the rock-oriented original and a J.Lo-style remix.

Once you rid yourself of any pretense of "art" here, Reign settles in well as a fine piece of guilty pleasure pop, certainly the best thing Smith has done in years. Rid of the reliance on cheap samples that demeaned previous efforts, here he's got sharp, modern beats, and the backup harmonies by trio Tre-Knox (which sounds like a cross between Sisqo and R. Kelly) allow his songs a more melodic bent. This is certainly the most diverse record he's made: "Willow Is a Player" mixes a reggae vocal flow with a stuttering, Timbaland-style beat; "I Can't Stop" sounds like DMX attempting salsa; and wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, should surprise just about everyone on the fun disco tune "1,000 Kisses." It's escapist fare that won't leave any lasting memory except for good times -- and isn't that what summer is all about?

The One (Jason Bentley Mix) - Busta Rhymes / Silkk The Shocker & Dub Pistols
The One (Jason Bentley Mix)
Busta Rhymes/Silkk The Shocker & Dub Pistols
Immortal Records LLC.
This is just one of the many tracks on the Blade II Soundtrack that deserves serious attention. The heavy bass line lays a great beat for Busta & Silkk to spit over. The track contains some great energy, and while Silkk is definately decent and loose on rhymes, Busta raps with the enunciation and power that carries the chorus and the track. Dub Pistols presence is represented with the minor key opening and slight faded-tinny effect over the chorus intro beats, as well as various synths throughout the song. A well-performed and produced track and a good addition to a hip-hop library.

Gorillaz On My Mind (Jason Bentley Mix)
Redman & Gorillaz
Immortal Records LLC.
Alright, this is gonna be a different track, right? I mean, just look at the collaborators! Teaming up Redman with Gorillaz was probably risky, but this track is a great pay-off. The funky sample from Gorillaz is simply a catchy sound. Redman raps with some rhymes that stay in your mind ("Pass the wheel I'm drunk tipsy punk / my sweat called whiskey / I'm looking for Lewinsky / So I can get head - Done? Get off me girl/I'm crooked like white folks dancing off beat") while blending perfectly over the various inserts from the background vocals. There are plenty of effects and synths floating around the chorus and verses; bubbles, gorilla sounds samples, and growls are just a few. This is one of those tracks that is unlike anything else - just what you would expect with Redman and Gorillaz.

You Give Me Something (Datalux Mix)
Jamiroquai
Promo Only - Mainstream Club - March 2002
Epic Records
130 BPM

Jamiroquai has been doing pretty good lately, and this mix is no different. The Datalux Mix of "You Give Me Something" is a good dance-oriented track for house clubs. It has a deep bass backing beat allowing for harder drum-n-bass clubs, and also has enough synths and breaks for more progressive venues. The mixing done on the song is superb, filled with samples and effects. It's truly a work of art. Jamiroquai's vocals lend a soulfull flavor to the mix as well as giving a seperate target for effecting; his voice is altered often throughout the track. That light echoing effect on the vocals is incredible. This track is a benefit to house/dance DJs.

Right away, let's make it clear this is not heavy trance. The playful high notes throughout the first break and the rest of the song make it, well, cute. That being said, it is difficult not to like this song. The quick snare beats and rapid synths get your body moving and put a smile on your face. At times the effects are so varied and rapid that your mind is grasping to take it all in, a nice change from the extremely repetitive house music that is too often the core of sets. Even during the pseudo-breakdown at the end, that playful high-note set keeps you wishing the song wouldn't end. This is a great, unique, uplifting track to add flavor to sets.

Feel the Girl by Ms. Jade
Label: Interscope
Hip Hop

Don't Sleep! Go get this one today. From the first four bars this track has Timberland written all over it. For a while now he has had the midas touch producing hit after hit and lives up to his reputation on "Feel the Girl".

The vibe doesn't stop there though. After guest verses on several of Tim's remixes like "Turn Of The Lights" (Nelly Fortado), Ms. Jade breaks out solo and just sets the track on fire. With solid verses and even catchier hook this is definitley going to fill a lot of dance floors. The 12' includes the LP, radio, instrumental and accapella mixes giving us DJs all the tools we need to customize this track to the fullest.

I'm not quite sure which is better Tim's beat formula or Ms. Jade's tight lyrics. In the end it doesn't matter because they weave together for the best release at this early point of 2002. Don't sleep.

Special thanks to DJ Eric C and Mo Kelly getting us this record.

  Addicted To Bass - Puretone
Funky, very funky!!! If you like a track that's got a nice kicking beat and and "addictive" vocal track, this is for you. While it may not have a shot at commercial success, this is one track you do not want to sleep on. Get this and play it in the middle of any set and watch the crowd go wild. I haven't heard a track this funky in quite some time.

Rock to Da Beat - Atomic Alliance
A hard hitting Trance tune that builds up throughout the song. At first listen, I didn't much care for it, but after a few spins i was hooked. Riding at about 136 - 138 BPM, add a nice Hard Freestyle (breakbeat to some) in the middle and you have another floorfiller. Great afterhours cut, or late night, the bass pounds and i'm telling you, that Freestyle beat is insane.

  Wonderland - The Psychadelic Waltons
The S-Man giveth, and you better have taketh, if you missed out on this 12" I'm sorry. It's Alice in Wonderland, Roger Sanchez style. Tight bass line, solid groove, another late night trance track, contains a lot of melodic vocal overlays, that will drive you nuts and will have you singing it in your head over and over. If you spin trance, you need this track.

  Timbaland & Magoo
After about a 4 year wait from their last album and with the passing of Aaliyah still in the front of everyone's mind Timbaland and Magoo deliver Blackground Entertainment's first release since the tragedy.
Every track on this album has a sick beat, come on for real Timbaland produced the entire project, this album features a plethora of guest artists also including: Fat Man Scoop, Jay Z, my new favorite Petey Pablo, Ludacris and a few others. Timbaland never fails to drop a surprise on you such as the second cut "Drop" it starts with a typical fat man scoop type beat and evolves into an early 80's retro dance beat. "Party People" featuring Jay Z is sure to light up the clubs and rock systems worldwide, and if you aren't into all the rap and experimental beats there is some laid back R&B ont track 11 "Love Me" it's a nice groove with some funky vocal effects, and what better a way to thrust the new production label of Beat Club on everyone with a song entitled "Beat Club," this is probably the song that will remind people of "love to love" the beats are tight as usual and Magoo's voice just cuts right through it.

  Queensryche- Operation Livecrime (reissue)
Ok, ok I know this isn't exactly a dj related review but there was a time when Jonathan Peters remixed a QR song (Silent Lucidity), and this is definitly a piece of history for fans of progressive rock. Those unfamiliar with Queensryche or their music must take note that they are a band from the Seattle area that were around long before it was "cool" to be from Seattle. This is far from grunge music, more melodic and harmony oriented. This album was originally released in 1992 immediately following the release of "Operation Mindcrime" a concept album following a deep story line evolving around three main characters. One of whom (Dr. X) is preparing to take over the world as we know it. That's somewhat the story but it's the amazing soloing and the tightness of this fully live recording that truly impress the listeners ears.
The CD was originally released as a CD/VHS set with only the recording of the album, but the reissue features two of Queensryche's early songs one of which is "The Lady Wore Black."
This live album is up there in the ranks with "The Wall" it's truly unforgettable and there are a few surprises. As always Geoff Tate's voice stands different from that of the typical front man, while he does sing in a high range he does not overpower the entire band, the solo's performed by both Michael Wilton and now departed Chris DeGarmo will please any guitar fan.
If you like this album you may also want to check out Queensryche's newest release which is a 2cd live set entitled "Live Evolution".

  Jay Z -The Blueprint
H to the izzo, V to the izzay there's not one more thing i need to say, following a tradition of solid albums, J Hova takes shots back at those who have been hating on him (Nas, Prodigy, etc. . .) This album makes Brooklyn proud and with stellar production as usual will go multi platinum. Is Jay Z the "next" biggie? No but he is in all respect one of the best in the game today. Just know that when this man says he gets 50 grand to do guest spots he gets 50 grand to do guest spots. Who else do you know that pops out solid hit after hit and keeps changing the rules to the game?

  Jadakiss- Kiss tha Game Goodbye
Fans of the Lox will not be disappointed by the first solo release of Jada. Right from the first "YOOO" it's tight, stellar production from the minds of DJ Premier,Swizz Beats and Timbaland bring you some of the hottest beats this year. Jadakiss' solo debut also features guest spots from Sheek and Styles from the Lox as well as Carl Thomas of Bad Boy fame and many of the Ruff Ryders. This is definitely an album for fans of East Coast Rap. The first single to hit radio "Knock Yourself Out" is sure to be banging in trunks worldwide for months to come, but you will also be surprised that there isn't one weak song on the entire album. And of course there would be great samples on the album the most recognizable being track 10 "Kiss Is Spitting" featuring Nate Dogg and using the sampe for "I Keep Forgetting (Everytime You're Near)" the one Nate used in "Regulators" This album is sure to be an instant classic.

Album: Before The Storm, Artist: Darude
Album: Before The Storm
Darude
Groovilicious Records

Darude's strongest release, "Sandstorm", was a floor-burner with some wild hooks. Expecting a similar style and basically a boring album, "Before The Storm" really surprised me.
The entire album, while keeping in touch with the schizophrenic style and rapid-fire synths that made "Sandstorm" so great, is not tied down to duplicating Darube's smash single. The second and seventh tracks, "Burning" and "Let The Music Take Control", respectively, do emulate "Sandstorm"'s incredible energy and heavy reliance on synths (that make great dancehall tracks, by the way), but that's about the extent that Darude takes it to. "Touch Me Feel Me" is a haunting, cool/funky track with a slower pace, allowing Darude to explore into a smoother, more laid-back sound while surrounding the song with sound effects. Following "Touch Me Feel Me" on the album is a song that almost seems to be its sequel: "Calm Before The Storm". It picks up the groove left behind and adds some power to take it to another level. The fourth track "Out Of Control" is a tightly arranged combination of robotic effects and an inspirational synth hook heading for ecstasy, all driven by an ambitious bass line. "The Flow" has the rapid lyrics and quick beat reminiscent of "Stomp To My Beat", showing the hand JS16 had in the production. The album even touches at drum & bass with "Drums Of New York", a slower moving track that nevertheless gets your body bumping. Capping the LP off is two incredibly tight mixes of "Sandstorm" & "Feel The Beat" by JS16; the end mixes give a great send off and an added touch of flavor to the entire album.
Not only was this record a very pleasant surprise, the more I listened to it, the better it got; not many artists can accomplish that. Darude does that and more.

Remember the good old days with those rhythmic, heady trance tracks that kept everyone dancing all night? The kind that you remember from raves where the entire crowd pulsed to the smooth trance beats, back when glowsticks were just being introduced. Listening to "Innocente" is like taking a trip back, reminding you of those days long lost. The song is like a whisper from long ago, bringing that great feeling back. Space effects add to the haunting, cascading tone of the track, a feeling also enhanced by the filtered vocals and the lyrics themselves. The track's hook has a large arena/anthem sound to it, further pushing the memory up from the back of your mind. Not quite laid back and not quite hyper, this is the side of trance we have been missing recently. Delerium brings the past to the present with "Innocente", and the past would be proud.

103 BPM

Although I haven't been impressed with Mariah Carey's recent releases, the Loverboy Remix definately got my attention. Da Brat & Ludacris seem to be everywhere now, and this track shows why. They take a mediocre, mellow mid-tempo love song and create a bumping dance track. Da Brat & Ludacris go back and forth playfully, spitting rhymes that flow so well, they seem to be a part of the original track. The guitar riffs also add some flavor to Mariah's vocals. Combine all these elements and throw in great production, and the remix easily outshines the original. When someone asks for Mariah's new hit, this remix will be what they're asking for.

108 BPM

If anyone needs to be reminded of why 2 Pac is considered a legend, just listen to "Letter 2 My Unborn." Filled with poignant social commentary, 2 Pac sent rapid fire rhymes over a simple background to create the tragic feel the track drives for. The chimes/bells are so naive and simple that it sounds as if a child may be playing them, an effect that certainly adds to the air of tragedy. The lyrics grab you both mentally and emotionally, especially considering the person rapping. 2 Pac's obsession with his own death is evident and is displayed powerfully throughout the track. This song is like the sequel to "Chances" and has the potential to be just as popular.

Everybody has been waiting for Eminem's rap group D12's first release; "Purple Hills" doesn't disappoint. Although Eminem does outshine the rest of the group, the other members of D12 do respectably, spitting with styles ranging from rapid and low-key to slow and drawn out. Complimenting the drug-infused lyrics is a tight sax hook. Altogether D12 puts out a pretty hot opening release, and with Eminem's popularity, a track that will be a favorite soon.

It's no surprise that Basement Jaxx's release "Where's Your Head At?" is amazing... not that anybody was expecting shabby tracks from these guys. I just didn't expect it to be this good. From the moment it comes on, you start nodding your head and smiling to the beat. The chorus immediately comes in as an infectious hook, bringing out that impulse to scream out that we all seem to have. Basement Jaxx gives us a chance to yell along with the lyrics while dropping some seriously funky sounds. The effects, the beats, all the drops & synths flying around make you feel like your in a crowded gymnasium with a bunch of teenagers and a new anthem to chant to. Basement Jaxx delivers very strong; this song is destined to become VERY popular.

Groovilicious/Strictly Rhythm Records
It's good to see that there's still a market for the darker side of house. Derb delivers with pounding bass, gothic arrangements, and a strong devilish hook. Derb extends the pulsing intro, giving plenty of room to mix, and drops the bass frequently throughout the track, lending plenty of mix points during the song's entire length as well. Effectively using snares and cymbals to add to the heady, night-life feel, this is a foot-stomping reminder that house doesn't have to be light and happy.

If you haven't heard the radio version of Missy Elliot's remake of "Lady Marmalade", it's time to lift up the rock and get into the real world. The good news is now you don't have to break up your house set to play it and get all those screaming kids off your back. Thunderpuss puts out a good, crowd-pleasing mix, getting in plenty of vocals to give the track an instant identity. Thunderpuss also does a great job in silencing out the bass at key points in the track, especially during Lil' Kim's rap. Although the breakdown sounds a little like something out of a high school pep rally (and maybe that's the idea), altogether it's a tight, mix-friendly club remix that does justice to both the original and the remake.

12" Anthem Club Mix
Promo Only - Mainstream Club - July 2001

In a world with a ton of songs about women being pissed-off at their men, it could be easy to overlook "The Worst Thing For Me" at first. Listen for a minute or two and you'll be reminded to send your woman flowers every Friday. This track is like "I Will Survive", only on acid AND crack. The pure emotion in the vocals pours through, almost drawing your attention away from the tight production and great synths. The simple and abrupt break is refreshing, surprising and, best of all, short. Pusaka brings the tempo all the way back up in less than a minute. A great track for clubs and parties everywhere; play this and laugh as ladies everywhere scream the lyrics at the nearest male.

BTW Be sure to check out the very end of the track, where the vocalist mutters some final insults.

It seems conga beats are everywhere, but who would have thought to mix them with The Clash's "Rock The Casbah"??? Apparently Pussy 2000 did, and the results are incredible. Even at a mere two minutes into the song, where Pussy 2000 debuts the sample of "Rock The Casbah" with enough energy to get everyone in the house moving, you know this track is going to be sweet. Pussy 2000 melds vocals, effects, and even moments of silence to create a whirlwind of energy and just doesn't let up, even at the very end. This track will make everyone turn their heads and start bouncing to the beat.

Looking for a laid-back throwback from the 70's house song? Look no further than Groove Jet by Spiller. This track blends conga beats, cascading sound effects and lofty, relaxed vocals to give that euphoria feel on the dance floor. Doing nothing extremely fancy, Spiller scores big switching up the beat every once in a while and adding some filter effects to keep it interesting. It's perfect for underground-type parties looking to step away from heavy trance for a while. It's also a great track to give your crowd a rest while keeping them on the dance floor.

Original Mix
Moonshine Music
Source:Promo Only Alternative Club May 2001
136 BPM

Naming this track "Body Shock" is being too passive... a better title would be "Heart Attack." This song's opening beat drives you to the dance floor, where the energy the bass dishes out will certainly cause a coronary. Sound effects are heavily laced into the hook and driving beat, giving the audience a mental as well as a physical work out. Halfway through, the track breaks down with an underwater sound effect, picking up to a mid-tempo energy building beat. D:Fuse gradually brings the pace back up, resurfacing with many of the effects from the beginning, as well as adding a few more. By the end, while the song finishes out with the tom-tom drum effect, don't be surprised to see parts of your audiences lying on the dancefloor in exhaustion, smiles on their faces. A powerful track with some serious energy.

Album: All For You, Artist: Janet Jackson
Label: Virgin

Fresh from being honored as an ICON by MTV and after a four-year recording hiatus, pop music diva Janet Jackson returns with a new full-length album entitled "All for You". On full listen, the album gives listeners a view into several aspects of Janet's life and personality. The first thing that is evident is her sense of humor. From the album intro and through several track interludes where she can be heard joking with her girlfriends. The humor quickly turns into high charged sexual energy on both the title track, "Would You Mind" and "Love Scene (oooh baby)". Lines like "I'm gonna kiss you, suck you, taste you, ride you / Feel you deep inside me" and "nice package, alright, guess I'm gonna have to ride it tonight” show exactly what's on Janet's mind. Surprisingly Janet pulls off the Harlequin Romance style lines with sincerity. The tone changes dramatically on "the Truth" and "Son of a Gun (I bet you think this song is about you)" a duet with Carly Simon. Where Janet angrily spurns a would be suitor, or "baby player" in her words, calling him a "stupid motherfucker". The mood then quickly lightens on the album's last four tracks, which include last year's hit "Doesn't Really Matter" from the Nutty Professor 2 soundtrack.

Musically Janet reunites with the production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Louis in co-producing the album. Rockwilder collaborates for production on five of the more dance-oriented tracks. Using samples from America, Carly Simon and the Chi-lites, the team reaches back in time to borrow familiar hooks from past hits. From the house oriented "Come On Up" to several 80's feel tracks like title song "All for You", the collection is as musically varied as the different messages Janet delivers vocally.

As far as club play, DJs will want to wait for the single releases and the slew of remixes that will surely accompany them. Through all the mood swings and style changes, the "icon" lives up to her image and delivers an impeccable album full of variety.

Tropical Deep releases a playful, yet calming single in "High Preistess". The tropical latin sound and inspiring vocals make this song the exact opposite of the hard trance that is so predominent today. It begins with a soothing, naturally flowing synth riff accompanied by a single maraca. The body of the track embodies the latin feel and keeps the mood light. The vocals have a Sade-like tranquility, somewhat husky and showing impressive range. The combination of soothing grooves and sultry vocals simply sets you at ease. It is simply soothing and great for kicking back and just listening.

Right on it's tail comes a clean floating synth that eases you back down from the snare drum rushes Tony Allen continually creates. Also added in to give more of a "flying" feel are the gliding, lofty vocals. Tony Allen does his release's title justice; "Take Me Higher" sends you up to the clouds.

  Oh Boy! by Southsyde Fam'
Club Edit 100BPM
Source: Promo Only Rhythm Club March 2001

With so many groups recycling the music of past hip hop hits, I sometimes cringe when I hear their attempts to make a new hit by using a clasic beat or break. I have to give Southsyde Fam' a pass because from the opening note of 'Oh Boy!' they had me head nodding to thier ressurection of Poor Righteous Teacher's 'Rock This Funky Joint'. Not only is the classic beat gonna keep your audience moving but the catchy 'Oh Boy!' chorus will have everybody chanting. The verses represent that dirty south style drawl at it's finest and are complimented by a powerful refrain belted out by an unknown but soulful female vocalist. Southsyde Fam' didn't forget the DJs and get extra props for great intro and ending breaks that are both easily mixable. This is definitley a candidate for the hip hop summer anthem of 2001.

RJ Schoolyard Mix, 102BPM

Source: Promo Only Rhythm Club March 2001

The highly over played Jennifer Lopez hit gets a face lift worth a lot more airtime. The tempo gets pumped up to 102, add in some hype background scratches and hits, reminiscent of C+C Music Factory's Make U Sweat, and this track gets seriously hype. Though still a regular on radio, many DJs had started removing this from their playlists but by teaming up with Fat Joe, J-Lo is poised to exploded back onto my and many other DJs playlists. While J-Lo's vocals remain the same, the addition of Joe's intro and surprisingly, pop oriented, mid-track rap are a perfect fit for the completely new production. Don't over look this reworked gem.

Son of a Bitch - Lady Saw
Club Edit, 95BPM
VP Records
Source: Promo Only Rhythm Club February 2001

It was inevitable, based on the success and subject matter of Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me", that some enterprising or angry young lady would answer the hottest song of 2001. Lady Saw steps up and speaks out for all of the scorned women of the world. The similarities to "It Wasn't Me" include the same beat, same melody, and the same duality of a singing chorus line with reggae verses. Instead of Shaggy giving advice to another playa that got caught, the scorned Lady Shaw tells a girlfriend that she caught her man cheating with the girl next door. (on the bathroom floor, on video, etc) Phrases like "Stains on the sofa", "underwear on the counter" and "She left her weave in the shower" get a little graphic but leave the listener chuckling. The 32 beat lead-in break has the two women discussing the situation over it, but is still easily mixable. The 32 beat out break, starts at the 3:22 mark and is perfect for mixing or voiceovers. With "It Wasn't Me" still burning up mainstream dance floors, "Son of a Bitch" will keep the crowd dancing and laughing at the same time.

Following each verse with the line "'Cause no one's ready to deal with us" will create an anthem-like chanting on dancefloors. A very short and easily bypassed intro leads right into the beat making the track DJ friendly, The Beatnuts have created a definite crowd mover.

Clean Version, 72BPM

It's easy to dismiss Luke's latest single... it carries the easy chorus from the fifties hit "Lollipop," and really doesn't offer any new concepts at first glance. Then you listen to it a few times, and find yourself singing the chorus in the car. This song is infectious and beautifully arranged. Luke smoothly sets this track into motion with Pitbull and Lil Zane laying down very nice lyrics. The song is simple, direct, and since it's Luke, VERY suggestive. Add that up and you get a song that's already being requested on major dancefloors everywhere.
